What a kundli is

A kundli, also called a janam kundli or birth chart, is a diagram of where the Sun, Moon and planets were in the sky at the exact time and place you were born. In Vedic astrology (Jyotish) it is the starting point for almost everything: personality, strengths, recurring themes and the timing of different life periods.

The word comes from the Sanskrit kundala, meaning a coil or circle. Traditionally the chart is drawn as a square or diamond, with the sky divided into twelve sections called houses.

Why birth time and place matter

Your kundli is calculated from three details: your date of birth, your time of birth and your place of birth. The place matters because the same moment looks different from different parts of the Earth, and it also settles the timezone that applies to your birth time.

The time matters most for your ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. The ascendant changes roughly every two hours, so a small mistake in time can move it into a different sign and shift every house in the chart.

The sidereal zodiac

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is measured against the fixed stars. Western astrology usually uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. The two have drifted apart by roughly 24 degrees, a gap called the ayanamsa. Most Vedic calculations use the Lahiri ayanamsa.

In practice this means your Vedic Sun sign is often different from the one you know from newspaper horoscopes, and the Moon and ascendant can shift as well.

The twelve houses

Each of the twelve houses represents an area of life. The first house relates to you and your body, the second to money and family, the fourth to home and inner peace, the seventh to partnership, the tenth to career and public life, and so on.

Most modern Vedic software, including AskMyKundli, uses the whole sign house system: the sign that contains your ascendant is the first house, the next sign is the second house, and so on around the chart.

The twelve signs and nine grahas

The twelve signs, from Aries (Mesha) to Pisces (Meena), describe the style in which a planet expresses itself. The nine grahas are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. The nodes are mathematical points rather than physical bodies, but Jyotish gives them great importance.

For every planet, a kundli records its sign, its house, its degree, its nakshatra and whether it is moving retrograde. A planet is also described by its dignity: a planet can be exalted, in its own sign, friendly, neutral, or debilitated, which affects how smoothly its themes tend to show up.

Nakshatras: the 27 lunar mansions

The zodiac is also divided into 27 nakshatras of 13 degrees 20 minutes each. Your birth nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at birth. It is used to find your starting planetary period in the dasha system and is often the first thing consulted for compatibility and naming.

Divisional charts

Beyond the main chart (the Rasi or D1 chart), Jyotish uses divisional charts that zoom in on one area of life. The Navamsa (D9) is used to judge the deeper strength of planets and the quality of partnership. The Dashamsa (D10) is looked at for career. These are calculated from the same birth details, so they need no extra information from you.

How to use your kundli

A kundli is best treated as a map for reflection rather than a verdict. Start with your ascendant, Moon sign and the house where your key planets sit, then bring a specific question to it: a decision at work, a pattern in relationships, a period of change.

You can generate a free kundli with AskMyKundli and then ask Guru about any placement or house in plain language.

Frequently asked questions

What is a kundli in simple words?

A kundli is a chart of the sky at the moment and place you were born. Vedic astrologers read the positions of the planets in it to understand personality, strengths and the timing of life events.

Is a kundli the same as a horoscope?

They are related but not identical. A kundli is your personal birth chart, calculated from your exact birth details. A horoscope in a newspaper or app is usually a general forecast written for everyone who shares a sign.

Can I make a kundli without my exact birth time?

You can make an approximate chart, but anything that depends on the ascendant, such as houses and many timing predictions, may be wrong. The Moon sign is usually safe if the Moon did not change sign that day. If you can, check a birth certificate or hospital record.

Is astrology scientifically proven?

No. The planetary positions in a kundli are real astronomical calculations, but astrology itself is a traditional belief system and has not been validated by scientific studies. Use it as a prompt for reflection, and consult qualified professionals for medical, legal or financial decisions.
