What is kundli matching?

Kundli matching, also called kundli milan or horoscope matching, is the traditional practice of comparing two birth charts before a marriage. Families in India often do it early in the process, and many consider it one of the first steps once two people are being introduced.

The main method is Guna Milan, a points system. Astrologers also look beyond the score at specific doshas and at each chart on its own.

How Guna Milan works: the eight kootas

Guna Milan, or Ashtakoot, scores eight areas called kootas, for a maximum of 36 points. It is calculated from the Moon sign and the birth nakshatra of each person:

Varna (1 point), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8). Together they add up to 36.

Broadly, these look at spiritual compatibility, mutual influence, health and well-being, physical and instinctive compatibility, the friendship of the Moon's ruling planets, temperament, emotional and financial harmony, and what is traditionally linked to health and family.

What the score means

A total of 18 out of 36 is traditionally treated as the minimum for a match. Scores of roughly 18 to 24 are described as acceptable, 25 to 32 as good, and above 32 as very good. These bands are a convention, and different astrologers use them with different strictness.

Treat the number as one input. A high score does not guarantee a harmonious marriage, and a lower one does not rule out a happy one.

Manglik dosha

A person is called Manglik when Mars sits in certain houses of the chart, commonly the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth, and some traditions also count the second. The belief is that this brings intensity or friction to partnership, which is why Manglik people are traditionally matched with other Manglik people.

There are many exceptions and cancellations, such as Mars being in its own or exalted sign, or aspects from Jupiter, and the strictness varies a lot between astrologers. Many practitioners consider it overstated, so avoid making a final decision based on this alone.

Nadi and Bhakoot dosha

Nadi carries the most points (8) and Bhakoot the next (7). A Nadi dosha arises when both partners fall in the same Nadi, and a Bhakoot dosha when the Moon signs are in certain unfavourable relationships. Both are traditionally taken seriously, and both have recognised exceptions and remedies.

Some explanations link Nadi to health or genetics. There is no scientific evidence for that claim, so it is best understood as a traditional rule.

Beyond the points

A careful match also considers the strength of the seventh house in each chart, the planetary periods (dashas) each person is running, the Navamsa (D9) chart and the placement of Venus and Jupiter. Astrologers compare how the two charts support each other, not only whether the score clears a number.

Keep the human picture in view

A kundli describes tendencies. Compatibility in daily life depends on communication, values, family situations and effort from both people, none of which a chart can measure. Use matching as one conversation among many, and speak with a qualified counsellor if you are facing a serious decision.

Frequently asked questions

How many gunas should match for marriage?

Traditionally at least 18 out of 36. Many families look for 24 or more, but the threshold is a convention and is not a guarantee either way.

What are the 8 kootas in Guna Milan?

Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi, scoring 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 points respectively, for a total of 36.

Is Manglik dosha a reason to reject a match?

Not by itself. It has many recognised cancellations and is judged very differently by different astrologers. Look at the whole chart.

Can kundli matching predict a successful marriage?

No. It describes traditional compatibility indicators. Astrology is a belief system not validated by science, and a relationship depends on the two people involved.

Do I need an exact birth time for matching?

The Moon sign and nakshatra, which drive the Guna Milan score, usually need only an accurate date and a rough time. Houses, the seventh house and dashas need an accurate birth time.
